Getting a new fuel filter doesn't exactly provide the same level of excitement as getting a new sports car. Or even a new steering wheel cover for that matter. But the reality is that a new fuel filter can significantly increase your engine's performance and fuel-efficiency. It's not the most exciting part in your car, but it certainly is an important one. The fuel filter works to ensure that the gas your engine is drawing is not contaminated with pollutants ranging from paint chips to dirt. If your filter starts to become clogged with these contaminants, your car is going to have a hard time getting moving.
We don't always think to keep up on replacing the fuel filter, but really, it should be viewed as basic maintenance in the same light as the oil change. It is a crucial component of your engine's performance and it is necessary that it remains free of clogging and capable of preventing those pollutants from passing through. Like an oil change, it's one of those things you might feel like you can always put off just a little bit longer. But really, you should just get into the shop to have it changed out because the sooner you do, the sooner your car will be back to performing as it should. Plus, getting it done will be convenient and affordable. There are numerous indicators that mean you might need a new fuel filter. Here are five of the common signs:
Engine won't start
Of course, this could be a result of a number of different causes. However, if your filter is totally clogged, it won't allow the fuel circulation necessary to fire it up. If you'd already been noticing issues with your engine's ability to draw fuel, and then your car became incapable of starting, this could be a sign of a fuel filter problem.
If it seems that your engine is having trouble drawing gas as it struggles to start, this could mean that your fuel filter is partially clogged. You'll want to get the problem taken care of now, before you end up stranded.
Car dies while in traffic
If all the sudden your car dies while out on the road, there are many potential causes to take into consideration. One of them is that your fuel filter finally became like a dam stopping the flow of gasoline.
This is another indicator of partial blockage.
Struggle at low speeds
If you are having no issues as you cruise down the highway, but then your car feels all herky-jerky at low speeds, you may well have a fuel filter issue on your hands.
